چکیده

In this work, the longitudinal residual stresses that arise from FSW processes were measured by means of the Contour Method. These residual stresses were then introduced into a numerical simulation model based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), and their effect on the buckling collapse load of aluminium stiffened panels was assessed. The sensitivity of the models to initial geometrical imperfections was also analysed.

Residual Stresses in Friction Stir Welding

Friction stir welding is an innovative joining process being developed for use in aerospace manufacturing. Like most welding processes there exist problems with post-weld residual stresses and subsequent geometrical distortion. The residual stress-state of a welded component can be modified using suitably applied mechanical tensioning and thus distortion can be reduced or eliminated. In the pre...

Global mechanical tensioning for the management of residual stresses in welds

The general principles behind the global mechanical tensioning technique for controlling weld residual stresses are examined using a finite lement model to follow their evolution throughout the welding process. While we focus specifically on friction stir welding, the tool is represented imply as a heat source. As a result, the findings have relevance to a wide range of welding processes. For a...

Parametric finite element analysis of stress evolution during friction stir welding

It is well known that the residual stress of the friction-stir-welded joint affects the fatigue strength and life, and the corrosion performance. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model is established to study the thermal history and stress evolution in the butt welding of aluminium alloy 6061-T6, which will comprehensively provide insight into the friction-stir-welding process....

The Effect of pin geometry on the mechanical property of Aluminium 6061-alumina composite made by friction stir welding

Today in addition to Join by friction stir welding, the composite fabrication process is also performed simultaneously. The main purpose of the present research is to investigate the effect of pin geometry on the property of Aluminum 6061- alumina nanocomposite created by friction stir welding. For this purpose friction stir welding was carried out by selecting five types of pin geometries on A...

Numerical simulation of transient temperature and residual stresses in friction stir welding of 304L stainless steel

Three-dimensional nonlinear thermal and thermo-mechanical numerical simulations are conducted for the friction stir welding (FSW) of 304L stainless steel. The finite element analysis code—WELDSIM, developed by the authors specifically for welding simulation, was used. Two welding cases with tool rotational speeds of 300 and 500 rpm are analyzed. The objective is to study the variation of transi...
